"'Go and see your grandmother today for I hear she is feeling poorly and I know you would cheer her up. Take over this basket with the bread I have just made and this fresh pat of butter.'"
Make some homemade bread and butter! And bonus points for bringing some to the neighbors! I used an easy Irish soda bread recipe that just uses basic ingredients. We mixed that together and while the bread was baking, I showed my son how to make butter. We poured some heavy whipping cream into a jar, screwed the lid on tightly, and then shook and shook and shook the jar, and then shook it some more, until we had butter! We poured off the buttermilk, added a pinch of salt, and then let it chill in the refrigerator while we were waiting for the bread to cool.
"Before long she saw some bright red winterberries and, tempted to pick a bunch for her grandmother's table, she made her way in the deep snow to pick a nice bouquet."
Go on a nature walk! You can look for berries or flowers like Little Red Riding Hood, but my son loves to pick up rocks and sticks and leaves as well - why not? Don't forget to create a centerpiece when you get home!
