We're Going on a Bear Hunt

"We're going on a bear hunt.  We're going to catch a big one.
What a beautiful day!  We're not scared."

Go on a bear hunt!  We had some nice weather sneak up on us, so we took the opportunity to go explore a nature trail and pretended to go on a bear hunt.

We found some long, wavy grass

and a deep, cold river
and even a big, dark forest.  No cave though.

"Oh-oh!  Mud!  Thick, oozy mud.... Squelch squerch!  Squelch squerch!  Squelch squerch!"

Squelch in the mud!  It was too cold for us to go outside and play in real mud, so I made some "oobleck" for my son to play with instead.  To make this glorious muck, you mix one part water with two parts cornstarch.  I used a 9x13 baking dish for a container and added a few drops of food coloring to make it more mud-like.  The best part  - it's not really that messy, and is super easy to clean up!  My son chose to have his tiny army men and plastic dinosaurs squelch around in the mud with him!  For hours...

"We can't go over it.  We can't go under it.  Oh, no!  We've got to go through it!"

Make an obstacle course!  I laid out a simple maze of couch cushions, chairs and what-nots and my son and I navigated our way through it all!
