Tito Puente, Mambo King

"Before he could walk, Tito was making music.  He banged spoons and forks on pots and pans, windowsills and cans."

Make some mambo instruments!  Claves are real simple wooden rhythm sticks.  You could use two wooden spoons from the kitchen, or small wooden dowels if you want to decorate them.  We also made some small timbale drums.  Any cylindrical container will work, but since timbales are shallow metal drums, I used some small, expired sample baby formula tins I had laying around in my cupboard.  To make the drum, I removed the lid and label, emptied out the contents, then covered the top opening with several criss-crossed strips of electrical tape.  I wrapped some tape around the side also to make sure all the tape ends were secure.   My son used two plastic chopsticks for drum sticks, but pencils would also be fine!

"The dancers twirled, the lights swirled, and the mambo went on and on..."

Move to the mambo!  I found some free Tito Puente songs on the internet and we had a dance party!  Okay, mostly I did all the dancing while my son played the role of Tito on the timbales.  I don't know if my son had ever listened to mambo or salsa music much before, but he really enjoyed the rhythms!
