Mountain Dance

"Slumbering volcanoes awake, roaring.  Fire, gas, and ash leap."

Make a volcano!  My son never gets tired of this experiment!  For the body of the volcano, I cut out a cardboard circle from an old cereal box, cut a slit halfway to the middle, folded it into a cone, and taped it in place.  Then I cut off part of the top for the volcano's mouth.  I put some baking soda in a small bottle, set it in a plastic tub, and set the volcano on top.  I put some vinegar in a small pitcher and let my son "erupt" the volcano by pouring it down the hole.  Again and again.  We didn't, but you could easily add some red food coloring to the vinegar if you wanted to make the lava red.

"Mountains rarely appear alone.  They dance in long lines that go on and on as far as the eye can see."

Make some mountains!  There are a lot of different ways to make mountains, but I saw a cute idea for how to make a mountain cookie range, so we tried it!  Based on traditional no-bake oatmeal cookies, they were fun to make!  My son especially liked adding the powdered sugar "snow."
