"Crunch, crunch, crunch, his feet sank into the snow.
He walked with his feet pointing out like this: He walked with his feet pointing in like that:"
Have fun with footprints! If you don't have real snow to play in, you can always improvise! We made footprints two different ways.
First, we made "vanishing" footprints on construction paper with water. I taped a few pieces of black construction paper to our tile floor, soaked a kitchen towel with water, and put some socks on my son. I had him stand on the kitchen towel for a few seconds before letting him walk across the paper. My son thought it was really interesting how the footprints disappeared as the water dried!

Even with socks on, only barefoot prints show up! |
Next, we made footprints with paint (you could use an ink pad as well). I laid down a tarp, rolled out some white banner paper, and taped it to the tarp. I spread a thin layer of blue washable paint on a baking sheet, and got a tub of water and bath towel ready for clean up. I helped my son step onto the baking sheet, squish his feet around in the paint, then step onto the banner paper. Repeat, repeat, repeat! If you're wanting discernible footprints, you'll need to keep changing out the paper. My son mainly tap danced on the paper and we ended up with just blue blobs of paint - still tons of fun though! When we were done, I let my son stand in the tub of water while I washed off his feet.
If you've got real snow outside, you can also go for a walk to look for different kinds of prints - animal, people, vehicles, etc. Try to think about what might have made the different prints!
"He thought it would be fun to join the big boys in their snowball fight,
but he knew he wasn't old enough -- not yet."
Have a snowball fight! We bunched up some coffee filters and had great fun throwing them back and forth at each other! After the initial "fight" was over, we left the snowballs out for awhile for surprise attacks later on in the day!
