"But the people on the boat threw peanuts into the water, so the Mallards followed them all round the pond and got another breakfast, better than the first."
Feed some ducks! We have a local park that's appropriately referred to as "Duck Pond." We collected some nuts and stale crackers and headed out to visit the ducks! My son took his time, handing out one cashew at a time to our new feathered friends, and loved every minute of it! There were even a few mallards out!
"One day the ducklings hatched out. First came Jack, then Kack, and then Lack, then Mack and Nack and Ouack and Pack and Quack."
Hatch some ducklings! First, we made some "mallard" eggs by dyeing some regular chicken eggs green. I wanted to make them into confetti eggs so I could hide a duckling inside, so I didn't hard boil the eggs beforehand. Using a push pin, I poked a hole in one end of each egg. I made the hole a little bigger with a toothpick, and then a little bigger again with a pair of kitchen shears. I didn't want to make the hole too big right away because I was worried about cracking the egg too much. I emptied out the egg, then rinsed and dried the shell. I mixed up some green egg dye following the directions on the food coloring box, and then my son dyed the eggs. When the shells were dried (and my son was otherwise occupied), I put a paper duckling in each egg and then filled them up with shredded tissue paper. I sealed the hole with a glue stick and a small piece of green tissue paper. I gave my son the nest of finished mallard eggs, and he enjoyed "hatching" them and finding the baby ducklings!
